The Big Final

Similar to my painting “My Angel”: Lots of imagination. I painted this picture in 1996. I wanted to fill a sheet 70 cm x 1 m in size with colours and ideas and I wanted it to be great. I had never painted such a big picture before. The motif is again a man and a woman. The man, being the observer, is dressed in a coat. Left of him is a second man, only dressed in trousers whereas the upper part of the body is naked. He is strong and brave. He has a good grip of a snake and on top of his head is the tin drum. With the tin drum, I am on the one hand referring to the well-know film, but moreover the tin drum is a toy from my childhood. For me, the tin drum is synonymous with childhood, playing, memories. My past. Easel, again imagination. Although, the easel is connected to painting. Therefore, I can paint a picture onto the easel and I have a picture in the picture. This idea also exists in surrealism, especially René Magritte implemented it in his pictures.
